An Inconvenient Truth

Hello out there. I know that those of you that actually come to my site and read my blog are the kind of people that would like to learn more about taking care of our planet. I just watched the movie by Al Gore "An Inconvenient Truth" last night with my husband. I was distressed and dismayed at how quickly we are killing our planet and ourselves.

I have always been a granola hippie type girl. I have always tried to voice my opinion and work on ways of being kinder to our planet too. But I admit to also getting lazy and driving more than I should and using a lot of plastic and not buying organic whenever possible to save money or time.

But after watching this movie and seeing direct evidence of how quickly our planet is going to kill us because we are killing her. I am dismayed. But also opitmistic to know that we can change what we are doing. We can vote for people in office that will put into action plans that will save our planet's resources. We can reduce, recycle and reuse. We can shop at our local food coop. We can walk or ride a bike or public transportation instead of always using our cars. When we purchase a car we can choose one that is gentler to our ecosystem and on our wallets for the price of oil. We can use renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. We can used biodiesel fuel for diesel engines. We can use cars that run on flex fuel such as E85. We can plant lots and lots of trees. We can all change all or our household lightbulbs to energy efficient ones. And so many more!!! This also saves money!!

All of these things will help our local economies. They will help our planetary climate by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air. This will in turn help our personal lives. We won't have as many weather related disasters, such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, melting glaciers.

We all have to do something. I know it can be hard at first. But if we all start somewhere small in our lives we will all benefit. Then we can add more things to help and it becomes a snowball effect in a good way for ourselves, our children, and our planet.

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his Salary depends on his Not understanding it" Upton Sinclair.

Please pass this message on. Please see the movie. And Please check out the website www.climatecrisis.net.

I have seen the movie as well as seen him on Oprah and must admit it has freaked me out. The really scary thing to me is that Americans really just dont care. They are more consumed by what pop stars are doing then what will be left of the planet in ten years

i'm constantly reminded of a quote by Ghandi that essentially says that if each of us would simply do what we could, then our problems would be so very much smaller, but since we don't they seem insurmountable.

i couldn't remember the exact quote so please for forgive the poor paraphrase.

i know i don't do all the things i could because they are not "convienent". i was just thinking that as i put on my dove deoderant this am. how much simplier would it be just to use one of those deoderant crystals? not to mention cheaper!

our curbside recycle stopped in november...i've been pulling separating our trash but it usually ends up in the garbage truck on mondays because we don't take it to the saturday recycling center. how's that for pathetic?

unfortunately, i think anon has hit the nail on the head about our society. ick!

I dont mean to sound so negative but it's an unfortunate truth about our society. We are not proactive we are reactive. I mean you mentioned buying a car recently, was it environmently friendly. Probably not. They tend to be more expensive so people dont bother. Ok no more negativity I just had to get that out society sucks and its hard for one person to make a change.

Well I wasn't able to afford a car that is a hybrid. But I have been reading a publication called Mother Earth News and it has a list of current affordable fantastic fuel economic cars and the one we purchased was on the list. It has EPA mpg for City/Hwy of 32/35. It has an Air Pollution Score of 6. Which reflects the amount of pollutants from the vehicle that cause smog and health problems; scores range from zero to 10, with 10 being the best. And a Greenhouse Gas score of 8. Which reflects the amount of carbon dioxide emissions( a greenhouse gas that causes global warming) from the vehicle; scores range from zero to 10, with 10 being the best.

So even though I can't afford the best type of car for the environment, it will be more so than a typical American made car. Although the list did include a few American vehicles. Including the Ford Focus which was our other top contender for price and mpg. Plus we like smaller vehicles.

So even though I have done a lot of things in the past to contribute to the demise of our precious planet. I want to change that now. I can't change what I did then. But I can try my best to make sure that our planet's future and my child's future will actually be a better one.

Im sad to say that my husband and I actually looked at buying a hybrid back about a year ago. But because of the fuel prices that were going up it was a long wait for the car so we got a mini van. Which dont really need for our little family of three. I actually was on the mother earth thing at the time from a shop Oprah did with Leonardo Dicarop (sp?). So Im also a sad excuse of the normal american. But I am going to join the bandwagon again. Its easier when you have someone doing it that you know and people not calling you a tree hugger.

Wow thanks for the extra ways to help the planet and ourselves. I appreciate any new info. And you are right it is a lot easier to start doing things when others are there to support your choices. I feel the same way. But of course I don't mind being called a "Tree Hugging Dirt Worshiper" because I am.
